I have a confession: I think alligators get a bad rap in video games. Yes, they can outrun any human on land and turn you into a very short documentary. But if I lived in a marshy swamp and couldn’t scratch my own nose, I’d be moody too.

Let’s also clear up a common mistake. Alligators are not crocodiles. They prefer fresh water, and honestly, they are much less aggressive than their sibling species. That weird combination of deadly and surprisingly chill makes them perfect video game characters. Some are snappy. Some are basically shy little guys. Here are my favorite alligators in gaming, ranked from terrifying to unforgettable.

7. Wild Alligators – Red Dead Redemption 2

Going on a legendary hunt in Red Dead Redemption 2 is usually peaceful. You ride through the woods, track a deer, and enjoy nature. Then you reach the banks of Lake Lagras. Suddenly the relaxation is over.

These alligators are relentless. They are extremely tough and can kill Arthur Morgan in one violent attack. Hunting them might earn you a good price at the trapper, but wading through thick swamp water is a gamble. I still get nervous every time.

6. Ratigators – Sewer Shark

Is it a rat? Is it an alligator? The Sega CD classic Sewer Shark doesn't care. The game is pure early 1990s FMV chaos. You shoot tubes through underground sewers while a co-pilot yells button prompts. It is basically Simon says with extra steps.

Between all that, you shoot Ratigators. Are they rat-sized alligators or alligator-sized rats? The FMV is too blurry to tell. I'm including them because the concept is too ridiculous to ignore.

5. Sewer Gator – Resident Evil 2

I did some deep research. Alligators do not usually live in sewers. Yet game developers keep putting them there. Resident Evil 2 is a perfect example.

The sewer gator is great because it feels completely out of place under Raccoon City. Did someone flush a baby alligator? Did the T-virus just decide to become an amphibian for fun? Only a bored Capcom concept artist from 1998 knows.

4. Latch – Lethal League

Lethal League is a futuristic sport/fighting game where you smack an anti-gravity ball at your opponents. The roster is full of colorful characters, but Latch stands out.

Most fighters use bats or sticks. Latch just uses his mechanical tail. He can even eat the ball and spit it back out when his super is charged. He also has cybernetic enhancements to help him function in human society. So the odds of him eating you are slim. Probably.

3. Guapo – Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 isn't perfect, but it gets one thing right: animal companions. Unlike Far Cry 5, which focused mostly on human allies, Far Cry 6 lets you team up with an angry rooster, a puppy, a robot dog, and Guapo.

Guapo is technically Juan Cortez's pet, but it feels more like mutual respect. Like they both know either could kill the other at any moment. He can join Dani Rojas on the road to revolution. My only complaint is that his jacket is way more stylish than anything I can wear.

2. Beatrice Santello – Night in the Woods

Bea might be the most honest and human character on this list. She is deeply flawed and caring at the same time. She was Mae's best friend during childhood, but life got complicated.

After Mae crashed out of college, Bea stayed in Possum Springs to look after her dad. Her mom passed away from cancer, and Bea took on a lot of responsibility. She seems cold at first, but as the game continues, she slowly warms back up to Mae while they investigate the town's secrets. Bea is proof that a video game alligator can be deeply relatable.

1. The Knife – Later Alligator

In a game full of alligators from all walks of life, The Knife still stands above the rest. This character is equal parts Goro Majima and an awkward bisexual disaster. That combination is absolutely charming.

He acts cool at the Very Adult bar in the Unsavory Part of Town, but really he just needs help practicing social skills. The best part? He briefly turns the game into a full dating sim, complete with awkward blushing and anime artwork. The Knife proves that even the scariest-looking alligator can be a shy little guy looking for love.

Just don't test that in real life.

In 2026, these alligator moments still hold up. Whether you want swamp terror, cybernetic sports, or a surprisingly emotional visual novel friendship, there is a gator for you. And honestly, that's beautiful.
